Furnished / Robert Wettstein

May 18 – June 11, 2011
Opening: Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 6 to 9 p.m.

We are delighted to be able to show you the current work of Zurich designer Robert Wettstein.
The simple, almost succinct title of the exhibition refers to advertisements in which the interior furnishings are included in order to add value to a room. The new tenant must therefore voluntarily expose themselves to an aesthetic that may not be their own. At the same time, the landlord exposes himself with his choice of furniture in order to win the favor of the new tenant. The presentation of the new furniture and objects aims to reveal this interaction between user and designer and thus enter into a complicity. Robert Wettstein tells stories with his furniture and thus also provides an insight into his biography.

Robert Wettstein became active as a designer in the late 1980s. His first international exhibition was “Gefühlscollagen / Wohnen von Sinnen” in Düsseldorf. This major exhibition was a reflection of a movement that Layla Dawson – an English design theorist – described as “the German school of welders and Black & Decker workers”. Today, the pieces are traded internationally at auctions as “German Avantgarde”. The “Herz” wardrobe by Robert Wettstein, which was on display in the exhibition, is still available today in the Anthologie Quartett collection. In the meantime, some new furniture and objects have been created, which are produced by Italian or German manufacturers. It is also important for the designer to manufacture and sell products on his own behalf. These include, for example, upholstered furniture made from art book or wrapping paper.
“Shaping the new century” at the Milwaukee Art Museum 2010/11 and the group exhibition at the Zurich Dienstgebäude (December 2010) were the last important exhibition participations before the solo exhibition at the Galerie am Hirschengraben.

The opening will take place on Tuesday, May 17 from 6 to 9 pm, the exhibition will run from May 18 – June 11, 2011
